The Everlasting Covenant

When King David expressed his desire to build a permanent cedar temple for the Ark of the Covenant, God dispatched Nathan to announce that instead of David building God a house, God would build David an everlasting dynasty whose throne would be established forever—a foundational promise in messianic theology.

Nathan's finest hour arrived when King David committed adultery with Bathsheba and engineered the frontline death of her husband, Uriah the Hittite. Walking into the royal court, Nathan told the heart-wrenching parable of a rich man who had vast flocks but stole a poor neighbor's single beloved pet ewe lamb to feed a traveler. When David burned with rage, crying that such a man deserved to die, Nathan pointed directly at the monarch and uttered the shattering indictment: 'Thou art the man!' Nathan accepted David's brokenhearted repentance, guided Solomon's accession, and authored historical chronicles of the kingdom.
