Archival Overview
Third patriarch of the Abrahamic covenant. Wrestled through the night with the divine messenger at Peniel, receiving the eternal name Israel ("He who strives with God"), and fathered the twelve tribes.
Biographical Record
Son of Isaac and Rebecca, Jacob experienced the famous vision of the ladder stretching between heaven and earth at Bethel, with angels ascending and descending. After decades serving Laban in Mesopotamia, he returned to reconcile with his twin brother Esau.
In old age, grieving the loss of his son Joseph until his eyes clouded with tears, he remained steadfast in faith until being reunited in Egypt, blessing Pharaoh and his sons before requesting burial in the ancestral Cave of Machpelah.
