Archival Overview
Fearless Northern Kingdom prophet who confronted King Ahab and Queen Jezebel over the worship of Baal. Called down fire upon Mount Carmel and ascended heavenward in a chariot of fire.
Biographical Record
Elijah declared a multi-year drought across Israel to awaken the people from idolatrous syncretism. Fed by ravens at the Brook Cherith and sustaining the widow of Zarephath, he challenged 450 prophets of Baal to a contest on Mount Carmel, where divine fire consumed his water-soaked offering.
Fleeing to Mount Horeb in despair, he experienced God not in the hurricane, earthquake, or fire, but in a "still, small voice," passing his mantle of prophecy to Elisha before his celestial departure.
