Archival Overview

Last Hindu king to rule Delhi and Ajmer before the establishment of the Delhi Sultanate, celebrated in the epic poem Prithviraj Raso for defeating Muhammad of Ghor at the First Battle of Tarain.

Biographical Record

Prithviraj III (Rai Pithora, c. 1166–1192) ascended the Chahamana throne at eleven, ruling an empire from Ajmer to Delhi, where he built the fortifications of Qila Rai Pithora. In 1191, when Muhammad of Ghor invaded northern India, Prithviraj rallied a coalition of Rajput kings, routing Ghori's forces at the First Battle of Tarain.

Magnanimously sparing Ghori's life, Prithviraj permitted his enemy to retreat. One year later in 1192, Ghori returned with 120,000 horse archers, launching a dawn surprise attack at the Second Battle of Tarain, defeating and capturing Prithviraj. His court poet Chand Bardai immortalized his archery in 'Prithviraj Raso'.
