Biographical Record
Prenkë Jakova was born on June 27, 1917, in Shkodër into an artistic family. Mastering the clarinet and directing youth wind bands, he studied composition at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome from 1942 to 1944.
Returning to Shkodër, Jakova laid the foundations of professional Albanian musical theatre. On December 1, 1958, at the Migjeni Theatre in Shkodër, his opera Mrika (with libretto by Llazar Siliqi) premiered to thunderous acclaim, making history as the first Albanian opera ever staged. In 1968, he completed his grand five-act historical opera Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu. Harassed and persecuted by dogmatic communist cultural commissars, Jakova took his own life in 1969.
