Biographical Record
Prempeh I (1870–1931) was enstooled as Asantehene in 1888 amidst British imperial efforts to dismantle the powerful Ashanti state. In 1895, when the British demanded that the Ashanti Empire accept a British protectorate, Prempeh replied: 'The Ashanti Empire must remain an independent kingdom as of old; we wish to remain friends with all white men, but to be subject to none.'
In 1896, British forces invaded Kumasi. To prevent the destruction of his capital and protect the hidden Golden Stool, Prempeh surrendered peaceably, enduring harsh exile to the Seychelles for twenty-four years. Never yielding the secret location of the Golden Stool, he returned to Kumasi in 1924, hailed by his people as an unbowed monarch.
