Archival Overview
Plains Cree peace chief renowned for his oratorical wisdom who successfully repelled a military assault at Cut Knife in 1885 while heroically forbidding his warriors from slaughtering retreating troops.
Biographical Record
Pîhtokahanapiwiyin (Poundmaker) was an adopted son of Blackfoot chief Crowfoot, bridging relations between traditional rivals. As chief of the River Cree, he signed Treaty 6 in 1876, urging Canadian authorities to uphold treaty promises of food relief during devastating prairie famines.
During the 1885 North-West Resistance, Colonel William Otter attacked Poundmaker's camp at Cut Knife Hill. Though his warriors repulsed the assault, Poundmaker personally intervened to halt the counterattack, saving dozens of soldiers' lives. Wrongfully convicted of treason-felony and imprisoned at Stony Mountain, his health was broken, leading to his formal exoneration in 2019.
