"Perfection comes about little by little through many numbers. Beauty resides in the proportion of the parts."

Archival Overview

Classical Greek sculptor and bronze master who formulated the Canon—the mathematical system of ideal human anatomical proportions—and created the iconic Doryphoros (Spear-Bearer).

Biographical Record

Polykleitos of Argos (c. 480–420 BCE) was, alongside Phidias, the preeminent sculptor of the High Classical Greek era. He transformed Western visual art by establishing a theoretical and mathematical foundation for sculptural beauty in his lost treatise, the Canon (*Kanon*).

Polykleitos demonstrated that physical perfection arises from exact numerical ratios (commensurability) among anatomical components: finger to palm, palm to forearm, and limb to torso. He perfected the technique of contrapposto—the dynamic counter-balancing of tense and relaxed limbs—exemplified by his celebrated bronze statues Doryphoros (Spear-Bearer) and Diadoumenos (Youth Tying a Fillet).
