Biographical Record
Pierre-Simon, Marquis de Laplace (1749–1827), came from Normandy to Paris with a recommendation from D'Alembert. In his monumental five-volume Traité de mécanique céleste (1799–1825), Laplace applied calculus to the entire solar system, demonstrating that orbital perturbations are periodic and self-correcting, proving the gravitational stability of the universe.
When Napoleon famously asked why his book did not mention God as the creator of the solar system, Laplace replied: 'Sire, I had no need of that hypothesis' (*Je n'avais pas besoin de cette hypothèse*). In his Exposition du système du monde, he formulated the nebular hypothesis of star and planet formation and anticipated black holes. In mathematics, he revolutionized Bayesian probability and the Laplace transform.
