Archival Overview

First Hutu Prime Minister of Burundi and close confidant of Prince Rwagasore whose tragic assassination on January 15, 1965, just hours after forming his second cabinet, shattered ethnic reconciliation.

Biographical Record

Pierre Ngendandumwe was born in 1930 in Ngozi province. Educated in administrative sciences at Lovanium University in Leopoldville (Congo), Ngendandumwe was one of the earliest university-trained Burundian administrators, joining Prince Louis Rwagasore in founding UPRONA.

Serving as Minister of Finance and later as Prime Minister from June 1963 to April 1964, Ngendandumwe was respected as a moderate statesman committed to national unity. In January 1965, King Mwambutsa IV reappointed him Prime Minister to form a reconciliation government. Leaving Prince Louis Rwagasore Hospital after visiting his newborn child, he was assassinated by an extremist gunman, a catastrophic blow to Burundian democracy.
