Archival Overview
Heroic Lumumbist revolutionary and Minister of Education who led the 1964 Kwilu rebellion against neocolonialism, assassinated after being lured back under false amnesty.
Biographical Record
Pierre Mulele was born on August 11, 1929, in Isulu, Kwilu province. Appointed Minister of National Education in Patrice Lumumba's cabinet in June 1960, he launched progressive reforms before being forced underground following Lumumba's assassination.
Mulele travelled to China in 1962 to study guerrilla strategy and peasant mobilization. Returning to the Kwilu forests in 1963, he organized the historic Simba/Kwilu peasant insurrection, implementing strict egalitarian discipline, literacy drives, and women's corps. In October 1968, lured to Kinshasa by General Mobutu under promises of a general amnesty, he was secretly tortured, murdered, and his body disposed of in the Congo River, an enduring tragedy of Congolese revolutionary history.
