Archival Overview
New France's greatest military hero and naval tactician, who captured English forts on Hudson Bay and Newfoundland, defeated Royal Navy squadrons, and founded the French colony of Louisiana.
Biographical Record
Son of Charles Le Moyne, Iberville began his martial career with daring overland snowshoe assaults against English trading posts on James Bay in 1686. In 1697, commanding the 44-gun Pelican on Hudson Bay, he single-handedly sank one British warship, captured another, and forced the third to flee in the Battle of Hudson's Bay.
Commissioned by Louis XIV to find the mouth of the Mississippi River from the sea, Iberville rediscovered the river in 1699, founding Fort Maurepas (Biloxi) and establishing French Louisiana. He died in Havana while preparing an expedition against British colonies in the Caribbean.
