Archival Overview

Beloved French humorist who created modern French absurdist humor ('le loufoque'), founded the satirical newspaper L'Os à Moelle (1938), and served as the courageous satirical voice of the BBC Free French on Radio Londres.

Biographical Record

Severely wounded twice in the trenches of World War I, Isaac adopted the pseudonym Pierre Dac, performing in Montmartre cabarets. In 1938, he founded the absurdist weekly newspaper L'Os à Moelle, publishing surreal fake advertisements, nonsensical inventions (the 'Schmilblick'), and philosophical maxims.

In World War II, being Jewish and a patriot, he escaped through Spain to London, becoming the voice of French humor on Radio Londres ('Radio Paris ment, Radio Paris est allemand'), famously shredding Vichy propagandist Philippe Henriot in live radio duels. Partnering with Francis Blanche, he created the epic radio comedy Signé Furax.
