Archival Overview
Christian Algerian physician who treated wounded FLN leaders in Algiers, worked closely with Frantz Fanon in Tunis, and eradicated tuberculosis in independent Algeria.
Biographical Record
Pierre Chaulet was born in Algiers into a deeply devout Catholic family. Recognizing that Christian morality demanded active solidarity with the oppressed, he placed his medical skills at the disposal of the FLN from November 1954, sheltering revolutionary leader Ramdane Abane and treating wounded fighters.
Expelled by colonial authorities, he joined Frantz Fanon at the editorial offices of 'El Moudjahid' in Tunis, serving as an ALN medical officer. Taking Algerian nationality in 1962, he led the National Anti-Tuberculosis Program for three decades, eradicating the disease and serving as a Senior Adviser to the World Health Organization.
