Archival Overview
Flamboyant, volcanic French actor and playwright celebrated for his larger-than-life presence, whose performance as nineteenth-century stage legend Frédérick Lemaître in Les Enfants du paradis (1945) is a summit of cinema.
Biographical Record
Son of theatrical actors, Brasseur studied under Harry Baur and Fernand Ledoux, associating in youth with the Surrealists André Breton and Louis Aragon and writing avant-garde plays. His booming baritone voice, flamboyant swagger, and boundless vitality made him an irresistible force on stage.
In Marcel Carné and Jacques Prévert's Les Enfants du paradis (1945), Brasseur delivered the definitive performance of his career as the exuberant, romantic actor Frédérick Lemaître, playing Othello and haranguing theatrical critics from the stage. He also starred as the sinister Dr. Génessier in Georges Franju's horror classic Eyes Without a Face (1960).
