Biographical Record
Pierre Boucherle was born in Tunis into an established Franco-Tunisian family. After fighting in World War I and studying painting in Montparnasse alongside the School of Paris, he returned home determined to overcome colonial artistic divisions.
In 1949, Boucherle founded the École de Tunis, bringing together Muslim, Jewish, and Christian painters (Yahia Turki, Moses Levy, Gorgi, Bellagha, and Naccache). He chose to stay in independent Tunisia until his death, venerated as a pioneer of cross-cultural artistic fraternity.
