Archival Overview
Flemish-born diplomat and courtier whose landmark Mémoires provided the first realistic, psychological analysis of statecraft in Renaissance Europe, chronicling Louis XI and Charles the Bold.
Biographical Record
Commynes served Duke Charles the Bold of Burgundy before defecting in 1472 to the service of King Louis XI of France, who recognized his brilliant diplomatic acumen and rewarded him with estates and political council.
His Mémoires, written between 1489 and 1498 and covering the reigns of Louis XI and Charles VIII, rejected chivalric romance in favor of pragmatic Machiavellian political realism, acute psychological portraits, and sharp economic insights into monarchical statecraft.
