Archival Overview

Belgian architect and resistance hero who organized covert escape routes for trapped Allied soldiers and distributed underground newspapers, executed by German firing squad alongside British nurse Edith Cavell.

Biographical Record

A respected architect in Brussels, Baucq joined the underground resistance immediately upon the German invasion in 1914. He published the clandestine newspaper La Libre Belgique and organized 'Le Mot du Soldat', secretly delivering letters between Belgian soldiers on the Yser front and their families.

Working closely with Edith Cavell, Baucq coordinated safe houses and false papers, guiding over two hundred British, French, and Belgian soldiers across the Dutch border to safety. Arrested in October 1915, he was court-martialed and executed alongside Edith Cavell at the Tir National.
