Archival Overview

Flemish rebel leader and godson of English Queen Philippa of Hainault who led the 1381–1382 Ghent revolt against Count Louis of Male and French royal hegemony.

Biographical Record

Named Captain of Ghent in January 1382 during the bitter War of the White Hoods, Artevelde rallied starving citizens and won an astonishing victory over Count Louis of Male at the Battle of Beverhoutsveld outside Bruges, taking control of all Flanders.

Refusing concessions to the French monarchy, Artevelde met the royal French army led by young King Charles VI at the Battle of Roosebeke in November 1382. In the dense infantry clash, Artevelde was trampled and killed, ending Ghent's territorial hegemony.
