Archival Overview
Prolific Lebanese composer dubbed the 'Sheikh of Melody' whose intuitive folk melodies produced Fairuz's most iconic and joyful songs.
Biographical Record
Philemon Wehbe was born in Kfarshima, a village renowned as a cradle of Lebanese musical talent. Completely self-taught without formal conservatory notation training, he played the oud entirely by ear and intuition, possessing an innate genius for unearthing infectious, timeless melodies rooted in Lebanese village humor and mountain folklore.
Wehbe composed some of the most famous songs in modern Arab history for Fairuz—including 'Sanarji'u Yawman', 'Nassam Alayna al-Hawa', 'Ya Tayr al-Warwar', and 'Kanu Ya Habibi'—as well as beloved hits for Sabah and Wadih El Safi. Alongside his musical output, his comedic persona 'Saba' in Rahbani musicals brought warm laughter to generations of theatregoers.
