Archival Overview

Supreme Greek sculptor of the Golden Age of Athens, artistic overseer of the Parthenon, creator of the colossal Athena Parthenos and the Statue of Zeus at Olympia (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World).

Biographical Record

Phidias (c. 480–430 BCE), son of Charmides, was appointed by Pericles as general director of all artistic and architectural building programs on the Athenian Acropolis. Under his visionary direction, the Parthenon was adorned with the magnificent friezes, metopes, and pedimental sculptures that define Classical Hellenic grandeur.

Phidias mastered the chryselephantine (gold and ivory) technique, creating the forty-foot-tall cult statue of Athena Parthenos inside the Parthenon and the colossal Statue of Zeus at Olympia, counted among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. His breathtaking drapery treatments and serene, noble representations of the gods set the eternal standard for classical art.
