"I have conquered an empire, but I have not been able to conquer myself. Delay is like death; it is better to move forward with courage than to rot in ancient habit."

Archival Overview

Tsar and first Emperor of All Russia who dragged the Tsardom out of medieval isolation into a major European empire. Modernized the military, built the Russian navy, founded the imperial capital of Saint Petersburg, and reformed science and statecraft.

Biographical Record

Nearly two meters tall and gifted with relentless physical vigor, Peter traveled undercover across Western Europe in 1697 during the "Grand Embassy," working as an apprentice shipwright in Dutch and English docks. Returning home, he forcibly modernized Russian society, mandating Western dress and founding the Academy of Sciences.

Defeating King Charles XII of Sweden in the Great Northern War at Poltava (1709), he secured Russia's "window to Europe" on the Baltic Sea, building the magnificent canals and palaces of Saint Petersburg from desolate northern marshland.
