Archival Overview
Pioneering Mississauga Ojibwe chief, Methodist missionary, and author who translated biblical scriptures into Ojibwe and fought tirelessly in colonial London and Canada to secure legal land titles for First Nations.
Biographical Record
Son of a Welsh surveyor and an Ojibwe woman, Jones was raised traditionally before converting to Methodism in 1823. Recognizing literacy and legal standing as vital tools for Indigenous cultural survival, he became an ordained minister and translated the New Testament and traditional hymns into the Ojibwe language.
Jones crossed the Atlantic three times to meet British monarchs King William IV and Queen Victoria, presenting direct appeals against colonial land grabs and advocating for First Nations education, land patents, and agricultural autonomy.
