Archival Overview
Iconic American actor who gained global affection as the rumpled, deceptively brilliant police detective Lieutenant Columbo, and starred in independent classics for John Cassavetes.
Biographical Record
Peter Michael Falk lost his right eye to cancer at age three, wearing a glass eye that became a trademark of his wry, squinting gaze. He earned two consecutive Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor for 'Murder, Inc.' (1960) and Frank Capra's 'Pocketful of Miracles' (1961).
From 1968 to 2003, Falk embodied Detective Columbo in 69 television mysteries, winning four Primetime Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe for his trenchcoat-clad, 'Just one more thing' character. He also collaborated closely with John Cassavetes on landmark independent films ('Husbands', 'A Woman Under the Influence') and played himself in Wim Wenders' 'Wings of Desire'.
