Peter Abelard (1079–1142 CE) was the pre-eminent dialectician of twelfth-century Paris, drawing thousands of students to the Montagne Sainte-Geneviève.
His masterwork Sic et Non juxtaposed seemingly contradictory patristic texts to teach critical inquiry ('By doubting we come to inquire, and by inquiring we perceive truth'), while his letters with Héloïse remain immortal.
