Archival Overview

Mexico's greatest racing driver, who won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, two Formula One Grands Prix, and multiple World Sportscar Championships in the Gulf-Porsche 917, celebrated as the peerless rainmaster of his generation.

Biographical Record

Pedro Rodriguez (1940–1971) raced motorcycles before making his Le Mans debut at age eighteen alongside his younger brother Ricardo. In 1968, paired with Lucien Bianchi in a Ford GT40, he captured overall victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

In Formula One, Rodriguez claimed historic Grand Prix victories in South Africa (1967) and Spa-Francorchamps (1970). At the 1970 1,000 km of Brands Hatch, driving John Wyer's Gulf-Porsche 917K in blinding deluge, Rodriguez carved past the entire field to win by five laps. Mexico City's F1 circuit, the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, honors his memory.
