Archival Overview
Vanguard poet, anthropologist, and linguist whose groundbreaking dictionary 'Toponimia náhuat de Cuscatlán' rescued indigenous Pipil place-names and whose poem 'Vida, pasión y muerte del anti-hombre' modernized Salvadoran verse.
Biographical Record
Pedro Geoffroy Rivas was born in Santa Ana on September 16, 1908. Studying law and anthropology in Mexico at UNAM and the National School of Anthropology, Geoffroy Rivas was deeply influenced by Pablo Neruda and Octavio Paz.
His 1935 poetic masterwork Vida, pasión y muerte del anti-hombre shattered romantic conventions with conversational surrealism and social fury. As an anthropologist, he conducted foundational fieldwork on Nahuat-Pipil linguistics, publishing dictionaries and rescue grammars that preserved indigenous heritage from complete eradication after the 1932 massacre.
