Biographical Record
Pavel Cherenkov (1904–1990) conducted meticulous dark-room experiments at the Lebedev Physical Institute in 1934, discovering that radioactive liquids emit a characteristic blue glow independent of chemical composition. His colleagues Igor Tamm and Ilya Frank derived the mathematical electrodynamic explanation.
Cherenkov counters became indispensable tools in high-energy particle physics, enabling the discovery of the antiproton and J/psi meson. Cherenkov was awarded the 1958 Nobel Prize in Physics.
