Paul Sérusier (1864–1927 CE) met Paul Gauguin at Pont-Aven, Brittany, in October 1888, receiving an outdoor lesson in radical color abstraction.

Painting on a wooden cigar box lid, he followed Gauguin's instructions ('How do you see these trees? They are yellow. Well then, put down yellow!'), creating The Talisman, which he brought back to Paris to launch Les Nabis.
