Archival Overview
Trailblazing architect who, alongside Victor Horta, pioneered Art Nouveau architecture in Brussels in 1893 with his Maison Hankar, famed for innovative wrought-iron facades and vibrant sgraffito murals.
Biographical Record
Trained in ornamental sculpture and architecture under Henri Beyaert, Hankar embraced modern structural materials. In 1893, simultaneous with Horta's Hôtel Tassel, Hankar completed his personal residence on Rue Defacqz, celebrating visible forged iron, carved woodwork, and painted exterior sgraffiti.
He designed the sumptuous Hôtel Ciamberlani (1897) in Ixelles with monumental round windows and gold-toned mythological friezes by painter Adolphe Crespin. His premature death at age forty-one cut short one of European modernism's most brilliant careers.
