Archival Overview
Devout military officer who in 1642 led the expedition that founded Ville-Marie (Montreal), governing the vulnerable frontier colony through twenty-three perilous years of Iroquois warfare.
Biographical Record
Maisonneuve was chosen by the Société Notre-Dame de Montréal to establish a missionary settlement on the island of Montreal, hundreds of miles upriver into hostile territory. Arriving on May 17, 1642, he erected the wooden fort of Ville-Marie alongside Jeanne Mance.
Maisonneuve governed with extraordinary piety, military resolve, and personal humility, leading defensive sorties and erecting the historic cross on Mount Royal. Replaced by royal administrators in 1665, he retired quietly to Paris, celebrated forever as the Father of Montreal.
