Archival Overview
Monumental French Catholic poet and dramatist who served as French ambassador to Tokyo and Washington, author of the sweeping Renaissance drama Le Soulier de satin and L'Annonce faite à Marie.
Biographical Record
Brother of sculptor Camille Claudel, he experienced a sudden, overwhelming mystical Catholic conversion on Christmas Day 1886 at Notre-Dame de Paris while listening to the choir sing the Magnificat behind the second pillar.
Claudel invented the 'verset claudélien'—a rolling biblical poetic line modeled on the human breath and heartbeat. As a diplomat, he represented France in China, Brazil, Japan, and the United States, composing his monumental eleven-hour theatrical epic Le Soulier de satin (The Satin Slipper) exploring cosmic love, sacrifice, and global providence.
