Biographical Record
Paul Bowles settled in the international zone of Tangier in 1947, making the white city on the Strait his lifelong creative sanctuary. His classic 1949 existentialist novel The Sheltering Sky set in North Africa brought worldwide literary acclaim.
A passionate lover of Moroccan culture, Bowles undertook an arduous five-month field recording expedition across Morocco in 1959 sponsored by the Library of Congress, preserving fragile rural musical traditions. He also translated the oral tales of Moroccan authors including Mohamed Choukri and Larbi Layachi into English, mentoring generations of visiting writers.
