Patrice Émery Lumumba was a Congolese politician and independence leader who served as the first Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo from June to September 1960. He led the Mouvement National Congolais to victory, delivered an unsparing indictment of Belgian colonial atrocities at independence, and was assassinated in 1961 amidst Cold War machinations.
