Archival Overview

Eldest of the heroic Mirabal Sisters ('Las Mariposas') whose brutal assassination by Trujillo's dictatorship on November 25, 1960, triggered the fall of the regime and inspired the UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Biographical Record

Aída Patria Mercedes Mirabal was born on Dominican Independence Day, February 27, 1924, in Ojo de Agua. A woman of deep Catholic faith and artistic grace, Patria opened her home to support the clandestine 14th of June anti-Trujillo underground movement.

On November 25, 1960, while returning from visiting their imprisoned husbands in Puerto Plata prison, Patria and her sisters Minerva and María Teresa were ambushed by Trujillo's SIM secret police. Clubbed to death and thrown in a ravine, their martyrdom horrified the nation, causing Trujillo's downfall months later. The UN designated November 25 in their honor worldwide.
