Archival Overview
Ancient Indian sage and philosopher who compiled the foundational 'Yoga Sutras', codifying classical Raja Yoga into the Eight Limbs (Ashtanga) to achieve mastery of the mind and spiritual liberation.
Biographical Record
Patanjali (c. 2nd century BCE) gathered and systematized the ancient, scattered contemplative traditions of India into 196 terse Sanskrit aphorisms (sutras). He defined the foundational purpose of yoga in his immortal second sutra: 'Yogas chitta vritti nirodha'—Yoga is the stilling of the fluctuations of the mind.
Patanjali structured the Eight-Limbed Path (Ashtanga): Yamas (ethical restraints), Niyamas (observances), Asana (posture), Pranayama (breath regulation), Pratyahara (sensory withdrawal), Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation), and Samadhi (absorption). His psychological architecture remains the universal foundation of yoga worldwide.
