Archival Overview

Venerated across the Himalayan world as the "Second Buddha." Tantric master from Oddiyana invited by King Trisong Detsen in the eighth century to subdue local demons, construct Samye Monastery, and establish Vajrayana Buddhism in Tibet.

Biographical Record

Celebrated in Tibetan chronicles as being miraculously born from a lotus blossom upon Lake Danakosha, Padmasambhava mastered all exoteric and esoteric tantric sciences in ancient India before journeying to Tibet. Partnering with the scholar Shantarakshita, he consecrated Samye—Tibet's first Buddhist monastery.

He hid thousands of spiritual treasures (Termas) across Himalayan caves and rocks to be discovered by future treasure-finders (Tertöns) in times of crisis, departing into the celestial southwest on his winged steed.
