Biographical Record
Francisco "Paco" Gento López was born in Cantabria, northern Spain, and signed for Real Madrid in 1953 from Racing Santander. Famed for his blistering sprint speed (clocking 100 meters in under 11 seconds with the ball at his feet), pinpoint crosses, and thunderous shot from the left flank, Gento was the lightning rod of Real Madrid's historic five-in-a-row European Cup-winning team alongside Alfredo Di Stéfano and Ferenc Puskás.
Gento played in eight European Cup finals, captaining the famous "Yé-yé" all-Spanish Real Madrid squad to a sixth European triumph against Partizan Belgrade in Brussels in 1966—an unmatched individual record in football history. Over eighteen seasons with Real Madrid, he made 600 appearances, scored 182 goals, won twelve Spanish League championships, and served as Real Madrid's beloved Honorary President until his death.
