"I was born like a flower in the field; when my time came, I flourished, and now that I have grown old, I shall dry up and return to the earth."

Archival Overview

Ninth Sapa Inca who transformed the modest Kingdom of Cusco into the colossal Inca Empire (Tawantinsuyu), rebuilt Cusco in the shape of a puma, and constructed the sanctuary of Machu Picchu.

Biographical Record

Born Prince Cusi Yupanqui, he rallied the defense of Cusco in 1438 when his father fled an invasion by the fierce Chanca warriors. Defeating the Chancas at the Battle of Yahuar Pampa, he assumed the throne taking the name Pachacuti ('He Who Overturns Space and Time').

Pachacuti expanded the empire from Lake Titicaca to central Peru. He designed Cusco's monumental dry-stone masonry (including the gold-lined Coricancha sun temple), instituted the mit'a labor system, expanded the Qhapaq Nan royal road network, and constructed the royal estate of Machu Picchu high in the Andes.
