Archival Overview

Distinguished Canadian poet and visual artist whose glittering metaphysical verse and Brazilian journals earned the highest national honors.

Biographical Record

Patricia Kathleen Page was one of Canada's most admired poets and visual artists. Moving to Canada with her family as a child, she became associated with the Preview literary group in Montreal during the 1940s. As the wife of Canadian diplomat Arthur Irwin, she lived in Australia, Brazil, and Mexico, translating exotic landscapes into luminous poetry and pen-and-ink drawings under the name P.K. Irwin.

Her collection Stories of Snow and her later work Planet Earth demonstrated an exquisite verbal precision and ecological reverence. She won two Governor General's Awards, the Robert Frost Medal, and was made a Companion of the Order of Canada.
