Fearsome warrior Oba of the Kingdom of Benin (reigned c. 1481–1504), known as 'Ozolua the Conqueror', who fought over two hundred campaigns, expanded Benin's borders, and initiated early diplomatic contact with Portuguese explorers.

Biographical Record

Oba Ozolua succeeded his father Ewuare the Great. Celebrated for wearing heavy iron body armor forged by master guild metalsmiths, Ozolua personally led military expeditions that incorporated vassal chiefdoms across Yorubaland and the Niger Delta into the Benin Empire.

In 1485, Portuguese explorer João Afonso de Aveiro visited Benin City during Ozolua's reign, initiating royal trade in pepper, ivory, and cloth. Ozolua sent an ambassador to the Portuguese royal court in Lisbon, marking one of the earliest official diplomatic missions between West Africa and European crowns.
