Archival Overview
Venerated Quebec symbolist painter known as "the Sage of Saint-Hilaire," whose mystical still lifes and magnificent church murals bridged tradition and modernism.
Biographical Record
Ozias Leduc lived a life of monk-like artistic dedication on the slopes of Mont-Saint-Hilaire, Quebec. Over a sixty-year career, Leduc decorated over thirty churches and chapels across Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New England with profound, poetic religious murals imbued with symbolic luminosity.
Equally masterly in easel painting, his meditative still lifes (such as The Reader and Still Life with Books) and mystical landscapes influenced generations of young artists, most notably Paul-Émile Borduas, whom Leduc mentored as a studio assistant. He received an honorary doctorate from the Université de Montréal in 1938.
