Pioneering Senegalese novelist and veterinary surgeon whose 1935 novel 'Karim' and 1937 'Mirages de Paris' explored the cultural clash between African tradition and Western modernity.
Biographical Record
Ousmane Soce Diop was born on October 31, 1911, in Rufisque. After completing his secondary schooling at Ecole William Ponty on Goree Island, he earned a scholarship to France, graduating from the National Veterinary School of Alfort, becoming one of West Africa's first African veterinary surgeons.
In 1935, Diop published Karim, one of the earliest West African novels in French, chronicling the moral and financial dilemmas of a young urban Wolof clerk caught between ancestral traditions and colonial consumerism. His 1937 sequel Mirages de Paris poignantly examined the emotional displacement and interracial romance of an African student in Europe. Following independence, he served as Senegal's Ambassador to the United States and the United Nations.
