Biographical Record
Ourida Meddad (1938–1957) was an intrepid teenage activist who joined the FLN network in the Casbah of Algiers during the height of the 1957 Battle of Algiers. Serving as a liaison agent and weapons courier, she transported messages and medical supplies between underground cells.
Arrested by paratroopers of the 10th Parachute Division on August 1, 1957, she was subjected to horrific beatings and waterboarding at the notorious El Biar interrogation center. Refusing to betray a single name, she was thrown to her death from a fourth-story window by colonial interrogators, her martyrdom memorialized in Algerian schools and public squares.
