Archival Overview
Eminent Norwegian Arctic explorer who captained the Fram on Fridtjof Nansen's drift across the Arctic Ocean and mapped over 260,000 square kilometers of the Canadian Arctic archipelago.
Biographical Record
Otto Neumann Knoph Sverdrup was born on October 31, 1854, in Bindal, Helgeland. A seasoned mariner from an early age, he accompanied Fridtjof Nansen on the first successful crossing of the Greenland ice cap on skis in 1888.
From 1893 to 1896, Sverdrup served as captain of the specially reinforced polar exploration ship Fram during Nansen's legendary expedition, successfully navigating the ship through the frozen Arctic pack ice. Between 1898 and 1902, he led his own monumental expedition aboard the Fram to the Canadian Arctic, discovering and cartographically mapping Axel Heiberg Island, Ellef Ringnes Island, and Amund Ringnes Island—mapping an area larger than any other polar expedition in history.
