Biographical Record

Otis Ray Redding Jr. was an American singer and songwriter regarded as one of the greatest singers in the history of American popular music and a seminal artist in soul music and rhythm and blues. Raised in Macon, Georgia, Redding joined Stax Records in Memphis, Tennessee, backing up his passionate, guttural delivery with the powerhouse sound of Booker T. & the M.G.'s.

Known as 'The King of Soul' alongside Sam Cooke, Redding electrified crowds worldwide, notably conquering the rock counterculture at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. Just three days after recording his contemplative masterpiece '(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay', Redding and members of his backing band The Bar-Kays were killed when their chartered plane crashed into Lake Monona. The song went on to become the first posthumous number-one record in US chart history.
