Founder of the Ottoman Empire and first ruler of the Ottoman dynasty, who expanded his small Turkmen principality in Sogut against the Byzantine Empire and had the prophetic 'Osman's Dream'.
Biographical Record
The son of Ertugrul Gazi of the Kayi tribe, Osman I (c. 1258–1324) inherited the border principality of Sogut on the Byzantine frontier. According to Ottoman tradition, he stayed at the lodge of Sufi Sheikh Edebali and had 'Osman's Dream'—a colossal tree growing from his chest whose branches shaded three continents and four rivers, symbolizing his future empire.
In 1302, Osman defeated a Byzantine imperial force at the Battle of Bapheus, establishing his reputation as supreme leader of the ghazi warriors. He laid siege to the major Byzantine silk city of Bursa, which fell to his son Orhan just as Osman lay dying.
