Biographical Record

Osceola was born of Creek and European descent and migrated with his mother to Florida, where he integrated deeply into the Seminole nation. He vehemently opposed the Treaty of Payne's Landing, famously plunging his hunting knife into the document rather than signing away tribal lands.

During the Second Seminole War, Osceola orchestrated brilliant guerrilla warfare throughout the Florida Everglades, humiliating US military forces. In 1837, he was dishonorably captured under a white flag of truce by General Thomas Jesup and died imprisoned at Fort Moultrie.
