Biographical Record
Assuming leadership of Alexandria's famed Catechetical School at age eighteen after his father Leonides was martyred, Origen lived an austere life of profound scholarship, employing teams of stenographers and copyists to record his lectures.
His monumental six-column textual comparison of the Old Testament (the Hexapla) established comparative textual criticism. Tortured during the Decian persecution in Caesarea, he endured steadfastly, dying in Tyre leaving behind thousands of homilies and philosophical reflections.
