Biographical Record
Omar Racim was born in the Casbah of Algiers into an ancient family of woodcarvers and brass artisans. Reaching supreme virtuosity in traditional Arabic calligraphy and illumination, he trained his younger brother, Mohammed Racim, laying the foundations of the modern Algerian School of Miniature Painting.
A fiery anti-colonial intellectual, Omar founded the nationalist journals 'Al-Jaza'ir' in 1908 and 'Dhou El Fikar' in 1913, advocating Islamic reform and civil resistance against French rule. Imprisoned during World War I by colonial authorities, his sublime calligraphic compositions adorned the finest monuments and mosques of North Africa.
